The Graced By Rain Beauty Player of the month for February 2026 is Grand Rapids Griffins forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygård.

Over the course of 11 games in February, Brandsegg-Nygård tallied seven goals and three assists, the bulk of which came this past week. To sprinkle a little beauty dust on these stats, he ended February scoring a power play goal in three straight games.

The stats don't tell the full story of what Brandsegg-Nygård brings to the power play. Simply put, Grand Rapids’ power play has come alive under Brandsegg-Nygård. “Well, it’s a little bit of his bread and butter. As always, a good shooter. Every time you send a shot towards the net, that’s a scoring chance,” said Assistant Coach Steph Julien of Brandsegg-Nygård’s skill on the power play. Coach Julien expanded upon his point to add that Brandsegg-Nygård will be an asset to the Detroit Red Wings in the future. Not just on the power play, but in all aspects of the game. “That will probably be one of his duties with the Red Wings. So, we try to progress with him day after day,” Coach Julien explained. “Not only on the power play. I gotta tell you, the last couple games, maybe 10 - 12 games, he has been progressing game after game.”

Hitting is another area where Brandsegg-Nygård excelled in February. As writers, we don't have public access to expanded stats in the AHL. However, from the eye test alone, his hits are high volume, high intensity, and perfectly timed. Often, Brandsegg-Nygard’s hits lead to a takeaway that results in a goal or a pivotal zone entry or exit.

His spatial awareness greatly improved in February. Brandsegg-Nygård knows where his opponents and teammates are located and the proper time to unleash a hit, pass, or rocket of a shot. It’s been enjoyable watching Brandsegg-Nygård pull away from employing a hit when he realizes an opponent’s body is at a slightly awkward angle and a bit too close to the boards. Instead, he’ll either attempt a poke check or give the opponent space and quickly reassess the next move.

Assigning Brandsegg-Nygård to Grand Rapids towards the beginning of the season was one of the best moves the Red Wings have made all season.
