Beauty Play of the Week : Dominik Shine’s Game Winning Shootout Goal

The Graced by Rain “Beauty Play of the Week” for December 31, 2025 to January 6, 2026 has been awarded to Dominik Shine’s game winning shootout goal against the Chicago Wolves on January 2, 2026.

​It was the shootout goal heard around the world. I haven’t checked yet, but I’m pretty sure a chunk of Van Andel Arena’s roof blew off when the crowd erupted in celebratory cheers after Shine scored.

Now, this wasn’t an every day, run of the mill shoot out goal. It was a wind-up slapper with the strength of 100 men behind it.

Throughout the game, there was a series of events that led to Shine releasing all of his emotions upon that puck. Multiple times during the game, Chicago took extra whacks after the play was blown dead. During overtime, Erik Gustafsson was speared by Noel Gunler, causing a scuffle to break out.

But the straw that really broke the camel’s back was Chicago’s goaltender Amir Miftakhov building a wall of snow in the crease at the start of the shootout.

So, no, this was no ordinary shootout goal.

It was a statement from the captain of the Griffins to the Wolves.

Van Andel Arena is Shine’s house, and you will not disrespect his team while playing there.
